The island is acclaimed for its flora and fauna, and is of scientific interest. There is a breed of mouse peculiar to the island. Millport has been the base for Marine Biological research since 1895 when Robertson had a laboratory known as the 'Ark', subsequently the University Marine Station was built. The island is of Geological interest also, for the Lion Rock (geological fault), and a small forgotten coalmine in West Bay.
