The Cathedral of the Isles
|
|
George Fredrick Boyle was greatly inspired by the Oxford Movement and commissioned William Butterfield to erect a Church and Ecclesiastical College in Millport. In 1851, the building we now know as the Cathedral of the Isles was complete. The chancel decorated with the flora and fauna of the island, ornate tile work, and the altar with screens and Angels. Some 14 years after the completion of the Cathedral, Butterfield orchestrated the renovation of 11th Century Church at Brigham in the Lake District. He paid much attention to detail, indeed, the tile-work, screened altar with angels, and painted ceiling are very similar (if not the same) to that of the Cathedral. Interestingly in medieval times, the relics said to be held at Brigham Church included - Moses Rod, Mary's Breast Milk, a Pope's Tooth, Fragment from Jesus' Cloak, as well as some other strange items. My close friend Judith who happens to be Priest at the Church joked that she recently did an inventory and none of these items were to be found, so she would have no option but to call the Police.
